The Knife – location scouting

Dark passages, backyards, alleys, narrow streets and small squares… Ever since the first draft of The Knife, I always wanted the action to take place in Bakklandet, Trondheim. This picturesque part of mid-Norways biggest city has it all, including a river and a very cinematic harbour area. As I always had this in mind when I was writing the screenplay, I knew we would find everything we needed here. But when we finally were able to bring director of photography Jakob Ingimundarson, production designer Kristine Wilhelmsen and producer Agnethe Sophie Buus Jensen up there, I realized it was even more perfect than what I had hoped for. Take a look at the below photos taken by my producer John Einar Hagen, and see for yourself. And yes, the colorful houses and romantic streets will be far more forbodding when we are finished!

Nice report. Bakklandet is one of my favorite places in the world, and it has rarely been captured on film. I can only remember Gaute Hesthagen’s video game-inspired short film “LoveGame” (2003), which of course is bright and bubbly where you will be dark and moody, with (I imagine) long shadows on wet cobblestone…
